Rachael Spiegel Photography specializes in modern B'nai Mitzvah photography. Our team is dedicated to telling the story of your simcha with stunning documentary images. We patiently wait to see moments unfold and illustrate the narrative of your family.
What makes your approach different?
I photograph Bar and Bat Mitzvahs exclusively. This focus allows me to understand the rhythm, emotion, and meaning of every part of the day, from the quiet moments on the bimah to the energy on the dance floor.
My style is rooted in photojournalism. Rather than interrupting moments, I anticipate them. I document the laughter, pride, connection, and celebration as they naturally unfold, creating images that feel honest, elegant, and timeless. The result is a gallery that tells your family’s story beautifully and authentically.
When do we take family and formal portraits?
We photograph synagogue portraits in the weeks leading up to your celebration in a calm and beautifully lit setting. Scheduling these images in advance allows us to create refined, timeless portraits without the time constraints or distractions of the event day.
Extended family portraits are captured just before the party begins, once everyone has arrived and is dressed for the celebration. This ensures we preserve those meaningful multi-generational images while keeping the flow of the evening seamless.
By separating portraits from the festivities, you are free to be fully present, greeting guests, embracing family, and celebrating without interruption, while I document the energy and emotion of the evening as it naturally unfolds.
How would you describe your style?
My work blends refined portraiture with documentary storytelling. You will receive elegant family portraits and vibrant candid moments from the celebration, all photographed with a calm and unobtrusive presence.
I focus on genuine expression, connection, and emotion. These are the images that become more meaningful with time and will still feel powerful and relevant decades from now.
What is the investment?
Mitzvah collections begin at $5,900, with most families investing between $7,500 and $11,000.
This investment includes portraits, event coverage, professional editing, and a personalized album design experience.
Your photographs are far more than digital files. They are the visual legacy of this milestone. My goal is to create meaningful artwork that will live in your home and remain part of your family’s story for generations.
Do you offer albums?
Yes. Albums are a central part of the experience. After your event, we will work together to design a custom heirloom album that tells the complete story of your celebration. From the cover materials to the layout design, every detail is intentional and refined.
Will you be the photographer at our event?
Yes. I personally photograph every celebration. When needed, I bring an experienced second photographer who works seamlessly within my style and standards to ensure full coverage of your event.
Do you travel?
Based in Montgomery County, Maryland, we shoot within 40 miles of Gaithersburg, Md. including in Washington D.C., and Northern Virginia. Rachael is not available for travel outside that area.
How far in advance should we book?
Most families reserve their date 18–36 months in advance. Because I photograph a limited number of celebrations each year in order to provide a highly personalized experience, dates often book quickly. In fact, many of my returning families reach out to reserve their date for their younger children the moment it is confirmed by their synagogue.
Just minutes after meeting Rachael it was clear that her talent was matched by her warmth and sincere desire to make this as memorable an occasion as she could. Of all the things you'll spend money on during the event, these pictures are what will remain long after the party's over. Even now, months later, I look at the photos that Rachael took, I see our son beaming with pride and joy, and it instantly transports me back to that fabulous weekend.

Rachael really made us feel comfortable. She was professional, but also warm and friendly. We can all be a little bit camera shy, but you would never know that from the amazing pictures that she took. I love all of the photos and especially love the way that they help me to remember the mood and overall joy at both the service and party.

Rachael is the best mitzvah photographer out there. We looked at many photographers before we decided to work with her, and it was the right decision. I cannot tell you how many compliments we got about our photos. When all is said and done, the photos (and our memories) will be what we keep forever, and we are thrilled with what we received from Rachael. She is also flexible, kind, easy to work with, and a fun person. Her background in journalism makes for photos that tell a story and capture the moment in an artistic and authentic way. She is a true professional!

I knew and respected Rachael personally first, and then I fell in love with her online photos as I started thinking about the details. I knew Rachael's was exactly the kind of photography I wanted for my son's Bar Mitzvah, so I booked before I had done anything else! To the extent that she was more expensive than other photographers, the quality and experience was well worth it! As we went through the process, I found that her completely professional-yet-low-key style was perfect for our family. Our kids are still talking about how much they actually enjoyed taking pictures on the Bimah. Now my only fear is having to choose from all of the wonderful pictures!
